American Black Walnut (Juglans Regia) is highly regarded as one of the finest hardwood flooring
products and is widely popular in up market homes, restaurants and shops. This is due to Its flame
or curly grain patterns provide a sophisticated, yet calm and decorative. The cool and stately brown
American Walnut is used in pianos, furniture, artifacts and in large surfaces such as panels and
hardwood floors. Its warmth softens the edges of modernity while the dark tones define spaces and
add character and a sense of luxury. American Black Walnut will lighten over time as it is exposed
to light, this can be reduced with UV filters on windows. Walnut floor is softer than a European
Oak so can be a little susceptible to high heel marks (mainly when the rubber protection has worn
away). This type of floor should not be confused with Brazillian walnut which is a very dense
timber that has no relation to the American and European species.
Quality walnut flooring will have good average lengths of over 2m. Aim for boards around 150mm
or wider to appreciate the beauty of the grain. If an oiled finish is preferred it is recommended to
apply an additional coat of oil once installed, this will not only give additional protection but offer
the possibility to buff and polish the floor to take advantage walnut fine grain. A lacquered floor
looks equally stunning and is well suited to the American black walnut flooring and European
walnut floor again due to the fine grain. Generally 2 grades are available Prime Grade Walnut will
have consistent colour and few if any knots, Nature grade will include prime grade floor quality but
also colour variation with blonde sap. It should be noted that the Nature Grade produces a highly
attractive floor. We also offer a nature plus grade which will have a more consistent dark colour due
to there being little blonde sap in this grade.
American Black Walnut's counterpart is the European Walnut Flooring (is appropriately named
Juglans Regina or Walnut King). More colour variation and lighter than the American walnut
flooring variety, providing designer look to your floor. European walnut is slightly harder however
both can be finished very well to provide polished look to your floor.
