INSTALLATION AND MAINTENANCE INSTRUCTIONS - Natural Plant Fibre and Wool Carpets

READ THE FOLLOWING INSTRUCTIONS BEFORE STARTING THE INSTALLATION. WARRANTY DOES NOT COVER MATERIALS WITH VISIBLE DEFECTS ONCE THEY ARE INSTALLED. PRIOR TO INSTALLATION, THE INSTALLER SHOULD INSPECT ALL MATERIAL FOR ANY DEFECTS. ANY DEFECTS SHOULD BE REPORTED TO YOUR DISTRIBUTOR/DEALER IMMEDIATELY FOR INSPECTION.

INSTALLING NATURAL PLANT FIBRE FLOORCOVERINGS (SISAL, PAPER, JUTE, SEAGRASS, COIR)

We recommend that our Natural Plant Fibre Carpets are fitted by a professional fitter. Plant Fibre floorcoverings,(sisal carpets, paper flooring, jute carpets, seagrass carpets, and coir carpets) are wholly natural products which respond directly to the environment they are sited in. For example, they will expand and contract when the moisture in the air increases or decreases. The yarns used to weave plant fibre floorcoverings are thicker then for example, cotton or wool yarns, and when woven together produce fabulous range of textures and designs. The weaves are quite open and this allows the range of defined textures which are an inherent feature of the collection.

To make sure that the plant fibre floorcoverings perform really well they should be installed using one of the two methods described below. This will ensure that there is no buckling or wrinkling of the flooring when it expands, nor shrinkage when it contracts, and maintains a dimensional stability, prolonging the life and good looks of your floorcovering.

Prior to fitting, the floor should be dry, clean, level and dust free. If necessary, trim the selvage edges of the roll. Cut the carpet 5 - 6 cm proud of the room dimensions, to allow for shrinkage.

1. Direct stick system – the floorcovering is stuck directly to the sub-floor using carpet adhesive. If fitting to concrete or cementitious subfloors ensure that the subfloor is dry with a relative humidity below 75%. Check with a hygrometer or Protimeter. Glue the floorcovering down all over its width, using a notched trowel to apply the adhesive. Press the carpet down firmly into the wet adhesive to ensure a good bond. Use a glider to ensure proper adhesion. Trim the selvages and tuck the edges in. Glide again after an hour.

2. Double stick system – a specific underlay is lightly adhered to the sub-floor and the natural floorcovering is stuck directly to the underlay. Using an underlay provides softness underfoot, sound installation and greater dimensional stability for the natural floorcovering, prolonging its life and good looks. In this case you may fix blank gripper to the perimeter of the room. Glue the Naturalay to the sub-floor with our adhesive using a 2.4mm notched trowel. Allow the glue to go off before applying the underlay. Stick the Natural Floorings to the underlay with our adhesive and press down firmly all over using a glider. Trim the selvages and tuck the edges in. Glide again after an hour. Do NOT lay Natural Flooring in damp conditions. Apart from leading to distortion of the carpet or shrinkage, damp conditions may also encourage mould growth or rust marks. Lengthwise joins can be made by butting the cut or selvage edges together and bedding the join into the adhesive.

INSTALLING WOOL CARPETS

All our wool carpets can be fitted in the same way as conventional carpets, with carpet grippers, or using a double stick system. With a double stick system a special underlay is lightly adhered to the sub-floor and the natural floorcovering is stuck directly to the underlay.

It is always important to use a good quality underlay, it will help improve the life and good looks of your floorcovering, provides softness underfoot and has good sound insulating properties. Expect to pay more for double-stick installation than for conventional installation. It is recommended that you always get an estimate as prices will vary depending on the complexity of the fitting.

MAINTENANCE

Routine vacuuming with a suction-only vacuum cleaner is all you need to do to keep your floorcovering looking good, and using barrier mat at entrances will reduce the amount of dirt walked into an area. Our plant fibre floorcoverings, sisal, seagrass, coir, jute, and paper, all have a natural latex backing which helps to prevent dust and dirt build-up beneath the floorcovering.

STAIN PROTECTION

Most natural plant fibre floorcoverings have a degree of resistance to stains, seagrass for example is very smooth fibre and is surprisingly impermeable to moisture. Some fibres, jute and sisal, particularly the lighter shades are prone to marking if water is split onto them. For peace of mind we offer a protection called Intec. Developed specifically for natural floorcoverings, Intec acts by coating every fibre with a polymer shield so that the floocoverings resists absorption of stains and dirt which is in turn helps your floorcovering look good for longer. It is completely safe and does not affect the colour and texture of the floorcovering. Intec is suitable for all our floorcoverings.

SPILLS AND DEEP CLEANING

For emergency spills and for annual deep cleaning we offer a Crucial Trading Care and Cleaning Box. This includes two specifically developed cleansing solutions for natural floorcoverings together with applicators and full instructions of how to deal with a variety of spills.

RUG BORDERS

Gentle vacuuming for regular cleaning, and for spills and deep cleaning we recommend you use an appropriate proprietary cleanser for the fabric of your border.
