How to care and maintain a hardwood floor with a UV Oiled finish

Your hardwood floor is a major investment that can add value to the look and feel of a home. If they are cared for and maintained well, they can last for a very long time. No matter what type of hardwood floors you have, proper care and maintenance is absolutely essential to keep hardwood floors looking its best. Here are simple tips and guidelines to follow that will help maintain the finish and the natural beauty of your hardwood floors:

A Few Tips To Help You Get The Most Of Your Wood Floor

  • A good-quality doormat placed at the entrance to the room will retain dust and grit.
  • Your wood needs the right environment: ideally, a room temperature between 19 and 21 degrees Celsius and around 50-65% relative air humidity. Exceeding these limits may cause your floor to expand and contract unexpectedly and cause such things as gaps appearing in your floor.
  • Wipe up any water or other liquids spillages immediately and take particular care with flower pots.
  • Stick felt pads under the legs of all furniture.
  • Lift and avoid dragging when moving the furniture.
  • Vacuum or sweep regularly to collect any dust and fluff.
  • Trim pets’ claws to keep your best friend from scratching the floors.

UV oiled floors are different from natual oiled floors as they are cured using UV lights. This is a popular choice with prefinished floors as the manufacturer can apply a factory finish quickly and the end user can have a floor that requires no additional oiling immediately after installation. thus popular with commercial floors where time is of essence. The other major difference is that a UV cured oil floor should not be patch repaired or have additional coats of oil applied immediately after installation as any new oils will not bond to the surface.

Routine Cleaning

INatural Soap is ideal for cleaning and maintenance of all oiled, waxed or soaped wood surfaces. Especially suitable for floors, furniture, panels and worktops. Due to the nourishing properties of the Natural Soap the surface is given optimum
protection. Natural Soap white is recommended for light wood species, while Natural Soap natural is ideal for dark wood. May be used for the cleaning and maintenance of all known oil systems.

  • Natural Soap white is shaken carefully before use.
  • 125 ml Natural Soap is mixed into 5 l of lukewarm water. It is recommended always to work with 2 buckets: one with soap water and one with rinse water. Clean the floor with minimum quantity of water – leave soap water on floor briefly in order to dissolve dirt. Remove dirty soap water with hard wrung out mop or cloth and rinse out in bucket with
    rinse water.
  • Always wipe floor with soap water with hard wrung out mop or cloth in order to re-establish the protective Natural Soap film.

Tip: Very dirty floors may be cleaned with Wood Cleaner and subsequently with Natural Soap. Areas with heavy wear may be maintained with Maintenance Paste after cleaning with Wood Cleaner. Particularly difficult stains may be removed with Spot Remover.

Regular Maintenance

Buffing the floor with Maintenance Paste gives a hard-wearing surface and may take place either by hand or with machine. Oiled floors should be maintened regularly – normally once a year, but more often when it comes to floors exposed to extremely hard wear. The maintenance may be done locally.

  • Clean the floor with 125 ml Wood Cleaner mixed into 5 l water. Leave the floor to dry for at least 8 hours. The floor must be completely dry.
  • Apply thin coat of Maintenance Paste onto 1-2 m2 floor at the time with white polishing pad or cotton cloth. Use floor machine for distribution of Maintenance Paste for large areas.
  • Make sure that the Maintenance Paste is polished uniformly into the wood. Buffing continues until wood appears saturated and silk-mat. Apply more paste if necessary.
  • If a very mat finish is required, make buffing with cotton cloths under polishing pad. Let surface rest for 4 hours. Do not expose floor to water for 48 hours after finishing

Underfloor Heating

Underfloor heating is now the heating choice for most new buildings and certain criteria need to be understood as to the effect of underfloor heating on timber flooring. It is important that the surface floor temperature does not exceed 27 degrees Centigrade. You will find it is far more efficient to run your heating at a lower constant temperature than to turn it on and off. Try to increase or decrease the temperature gradually as sudden temperature changes can harm your flooring resulting in shrinkage i.e no more than 5 degrees Centigrade per day.
