Good Wood

One of the strongest credentials of wood is that it derives from a renewable, living source, and one that naturally reduces levels of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere.

However the global environment is threatened by mankind. Our activities change the climate, contaminate the land, pollute the air and destroy other species which have an equal right to exist.

Choosing to buy responsibly sourced wooden flooring can help to:

  1. Protect forest eco-system including the diverse, wildlife-friendly landscapes and other native species
  2. Create a stable global climate
  3. Lock away carbon in a product that has a long life and is completely recyclable
  4. Avoid chemical pollutants emitted by other flooring materials

Many of the world’s eco-systems are given structure and protection by trees. Simply put, no trees, no eco-system.
One of the best ways to conserve trees is to responsibly manage their habitat, protect what we have, and bring back what we have lost.

Ironically the responsible management of trees includes cutting them down. The important thing is that this is done with minimum damage to the environment, whilst helping local people to see the profitability of protecting their native habitat and planting more trees. Without this economic carrot, trees are robbed from the land for a quick profit or burnt for landlords to raise beef stock.

As a consumer, our demand for third party certified wood can give forest owners financial incentives to adopt more sustainable practices. So when you buy responsibly sourced wooden flooring, certified by an independent Forest Certification scheme such as the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) and/or Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification (PEFC), you know that you are helping to protect the world’s forest.

The FSC and PEFC system independently guarantees a chain of custody from forest to store. This proves that the wood comes from well-managed forests and controlled sources. The FSC and PEFC balance environmental, economic and social aspects of forestry.

FSC and PEFC are supported by Urbane Living. As a business, we are committed to the responsible sourcing of products so that together we can protect our world’s beautiful forests and make a difference.
