Creating a safe and healthy household is not rocket science! Here is a checklist and some very simple tips for creating a healthy indoor climate:

Spring cleaning
Spring has sprung and if you are having a clean-up avoid using toxic cleaners and air fresheners. Use natural waxes, polishes, and cleaning products. Scent the room with flowers, herbs, and fragrant essential oils. Remove products that contain chemical pesticides and fungicides, both of which contain toxic irritants and possible carcinogens. They are found in many common household products. Try using safe and organic products. If you must use chemical cleaners, protect your skin by wearing gloves and make sure the room is well ventilated.

Air
Follow your nose. Your home should always be breathable. If your nose is telling you the air you are breathing is stale and humid, then you need to do something about it. Consider removing synthetic carpet that can pollute your indoor air quality. Synthetics such as polypropylene and polyester used in carpeting and underlays are known to emit formaldehyde vapors. If you must have carpets in your home, use natural untreated materials such as wool and natural fibers flooring. Vacuum the carpets regularly and more often in high traffic areas. Make sure there is plenty of ventilation, use natural air flow, and ventilate to the outside.

Water supply
Make sure your water is safe and free from pollutants especially radon. Radon in the water supply has been linked to intestinal cancers. Use filtration systems, if possible. Have your water tested to determine the most suitable filtration system to use for you and your family. If you detect high levels of radon or health threatening organisms in water, always deal with the issue first before filtering your water. Contact your local authority for advice.

Building materials
Natural building materials can regulate temperature, humidity, and air flow thus increasing the quality of air. If you are building a new home or decorating, use natural building materials whenever possible such as durable timber or reclaimed materials. If you are replacing your floors, consider using bamboo or wood flooring as it is an excellent thermal insulator. When you are tiling or hanging wallpaper, use traditional non-chemical adhesive with low solvent content. Always avoid petrochemical paints that contain toxic vapors and odors. Use low or zero VOC paint made from natural resins, oils, and pigments.

Electricity
Allow plenty of sunlight and daylight into the room. Lessen the use of electrical equipment especially in sleeping spaces. If you are building a new house consider reducing the effect of electromagnetic fields when designing the electrical system.

Heating systems
Underfloor heating, wall-mounted, or sealed combustion fireplace are healthy options. If you already have a system installed, regular and thorough maintenance is essential.

Peace and quiet
A healthy home is peaceful and quiet, protected and insulated from external and internal noise. Opt for quality underlay that is known to have good sound insulation. Wear slippers or go barefoot to reduce noise.
